Colorado Government Employee Pay Packages

The Pueblo Chieftain has a story about government employee benefits. If you're familiar with the debate in Colorado, you can probably skip the story since it contains all of the same talking points from both sides. (Though they were sure to include the Colorado WINS thug blaming the bad economy on evil bankers and CEOs.) What is interesting is the survey of government salaries (PDF). (Disclosure: I am a state employee.)

The survey focuses on Pueblo County, since that's where the Chieftain is based, but also includes the salaries of state elected officials and select job titles. If you feel like digging, you can find salary ranges for classified employee job classes on the DPA web site. If you want to have some real fun, DPA has a Total Compensation Calculator where you can put in a monthly salary, pick the health plan, PERA contribution, etc. and see the total compensation totals.

I take issue with the PERA calculator in Compensation Calculator. The state only contributes 7.68 percent of my salary to PERA. That's not an option in the calculator. That's going to drive the total up from reality. You can get a summary of the pay package here (PDF).

A couple of interesting data points from the state section of the Chieftain report:

  • State legislators earn $30,000 per year plus $99 for committee meetings outside of the session. There is also a per diem for expenses.
  • The Treasurer and Secretary of State each make $68,500 per year.
  • The Governor pulls down $90,000 per year.
